How much does a dental cleaning cost?+
A routine cleaning for an existing patient generally runs $95 to $150 in the Bradenton area, and a new patient appointment with exam and x-rays $180 to $350. Most PPO dental plans cover two preventive visits a year at or near 100 percent, so many patients pay nothing.
What is the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?+
A routine cleaning removes deposits from the visible tooth surface and just below the gum edge. A deep cleaning, properly called scaling and root planing, cleans the root surfaces inside gum pockets that have formed because of gum disease. It is done with local anaesthetic, usually over two visits, and typically costs $200 to $350 per quadrant. It is treatment for a diagnosed condition, not an upgrade.
Does a cleaning hurt?+
It should not. Sensitivity is common if your gums are already inflamed, which is itself the reason to have it done. Tell the hygienist and they can numb the area. It gets easier every time as the gum health improves.
How often do I need one?+
Every six months suits most adults. If you have gum disease, smoke, have a dry mouth from medication, or are in orthodontic treatment, every three or four months is often the right interval and we will explain the reasoning rather than simply booking it.

What we actually do
- Assess. Gum pockets are measured around each tooth, not eyeballed. That number is what tells us whether this is gingivitis or something that has already cost you bone.
- Remove. Hardened calculus is removed with ultrasonic and hand instruments, above and just below the gum line. Brushing cannot do this; calculus is mineralised.
- Polish. Removes surface stain and leaves a smooth surface that plaque takes longer to build up on.
- Show you. The most useful part of the appointment is usually the two minutes on where you are consistently missing, because that is what changes the next six months.
What works at home
- Twice a day, two minutes, fluoride toothpaste. Spit, do not rinse. Rinsing washes away the fluoride you just paid for.
- Clean between the teeth once a day. Interdental brushes beat floss where the gaps are big enough to take them. The best tool is the one you will actually use.
- An electric brush with a pressure sensor genuinely outperforms a manual brush for most people, mostly by stopping them scrubbing too hard.
- Frequency of sugar matters more than amount. Every exposure starts an acid attack lasting twenty to thirty minutes. Grazing is worse than dessert.
If it has been a long time
Come anyway. Very heavy build-up may need more than one appointment to clear, and gums that have been inflamed for years will bleed at the first visit. That is expected, it is not a judgement, and it improves quickly once the deposits are gone.

My teeth are sensitive afterwards. Is that normal?+
Mild sensitivity for a day or two is common, especially after a first cleaning in a while, because root surfaces that were covered by calculus are newly exposed. A sensitivity toothpaste used for a fortnight usually settles it.
Can a cleaning whiten my teeth?+
It removes surface stain from coffee, tea and tobacco, which often looks like whitening. It does not change the underlying shade of the tooth. If you want that, ask about whitening.
Do children need cleanings too?+
Yes, alongside fluoride varnish and, when the adult back teeth come through, sealants.
